Rhett

So I still need to go back and edit my last post, because it reads horribly. Anyhow, on with the show. The next dog we adopted was a beautiful little pit bull named Rhett. We were originally looking at another dog at the Friendswood Animal Shelter named Fred. He seemed like he had the energy to match Peter and a good nature to boot. But when we called, Fred had already been adopted (thank God, as the shelter was full and he was next on the kill list). The lady in charge told me they had another dog I might want to check out. So, October 4th, 2011 (our second anniversary) we got in the car and headed over there. Peter came with us so we could see how he would get along with another dog. They brought Rhett out, this stocky little bully dog. He must have been tired, because he seemed a bit uninterested in Peter. We walked them around together. They seemed to acknowledge the other one, but not much else. Rhett was such a calm dog. My husband and I talked it over, and we decided to take Rhett home with us that night. It took a few days for them to get used to each other.

We don't know much about Rhett's past. We know he's around the same age as Peter. He must have been around some people in the past, as he knows how to sit and shake. At first he was very protective of his food. He would growl if Peter came near it. (We hoped with time and adjustment that this would go away, and it has. Only rarely will Rhett give a little growl if Peter seems like he wants to take something away from Rhett, which is totally natural.) He had been found roaming around the streets of Friendswood, and was picked up in the rain near the high school and brought to the shelter. These are some pics that the photographer who volunteers with the shelter took of our boy:

Rhett and Peter are now best friends and totally inseparable. Rhett loves to play outside with a rope or soccer ball, and Peter joins in the game too. He and Peter wrestle and play tug-of-war, and Rhett loves to go outside and bask in the sun while chewing on a big bone. The little guy (50 lbs) is also extremely strong. He can jump onto our kitchen counters! He also routinely jumps over the doggie gate we have that separates the kitchen from the living room.

He can be a bit skittish and scared of some things, but we always try to reassure him that he is ok. When he thinks he is in trouble or that we're mad at him, he tilts his head and raises his paw and his ears fall down as if to say, "Sorry mommy. But look how cute I am! You can't stay mad at me!" He and Peter are the perfect match. They wear each other out and love to be in each other's company. I'll post some funny videos and more pics soon, as well as some info about our new addition, a little kitten named Tux!

This first post I'm just going to share a few pictures of our first dog, Peter. We believe he is an Anatolian Shepherd mix. At a year and a half, he's around 50 pounds. We adopted him from Friends 4 Life in Houston, TX when he was around 6 months old. The first day we met him was on my birthday, March 20th. Friends 4 Life sets up a mobile site at Discover Green Park every Saturday, so we went over there to check him out (I had seen his adorable little picture online). When we got there, he was all tuckered out. We took him on a short little walk with his fosters and he was so quiet and sweet. He was so cute wearing a little red bandana around his neck too. I totally fell in love with him. Jeff and I decided we wanted to bring him home, so a week later, we picked him up and he came home with us. He whined a lot in the car for the first 10 minutes of the drive back, but then he calmed down. These pictures are from his first night home with us.

Handsome little guy.

We put him in a canvas kennel for a little while. For a couple of weeks he whined all night and wanted to be in our room, but we didn't want to get him used to that. Eventually, he was able to sleep fine.

It turned out that Peter wasn't the quiet little guy we thought he was. He was a real handful. He tore up the canvas kennel he first had. We ended up getting him a doggie bed (further down the page) which he completely ate through. He also managed to chew through various pieces of furniture, our walls, cabinets, etc. Despite walks, playing outside, giving him chew toys, he just wouldn't stop. Soon, it was time to get him fixed. After the surgery, he was the quietest we'd ever seen him.

Resting on the bed he eventually ate.

Still groggy from getting fixed.
Even after the surgery, he didn't calm down. We took him to dog training. That helped a bit though, to be honest, we were not the best at being consistent with him and he is just a very stubborn dog as well. He destroyed 2 library books and managed to grab a container of cookies and eat the whole thing (twice!!!). And that still doesn't cover it all. I have to admit there were times I was so frustrated and angry. We started taking him to the dog park to socialize, and he LOVED it. Always has a blast and gets worn out.

After a day at the park.
We realized that he loved being around other dogs, and it would be great if he had a brother or sister for him to play with at home. Fast-forward to October, and that's when we got Rhett. To be continued in the next post.
